I found the Standards of Practice and the Catholic Graduate Expectations to be very similar. They both expect teachers/students to be very caring, respectful individuals who are life long learners and independent thinkers who contribute to society. The differences lie in our faith. We expect our students to participate in church life celebrating the love for God through sacraments, prayers, and reflection.
As a Catholic teacher, I model this expectation everyday in the classroom, so it is part of my professional practice. We start our day with a prayer a whether it be trough the PA or teacher/ student lead in the classroom. Some students may not like this ritual but it does become part of their lives.
We also expect our students to be reflective and creative thinkers. As Catholic teachers we want our students to keep the gospel values in mind when they are evaluating situations - this is also related to professional practice. In the classroom whatever the topic is as we consider the pros and cons as we evaluate the issue we are also including the church’s point of view. It also gives us an opportunity to discuss related gospel values as well.
