Reflection on the Kingdom of God
The comparison of the Lord’s Prayer and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs is listed below. The words in blue in Maslow’s hierarchy column indicate a comparison to the Lord’s Prayer.
Based on the class readings, I have come to know that the Lord’s Prayer is very important to Christians because it is what Jesus gave to his disciples as a form of prayer when they asked him to teach them how to pray to God. I would not be surprised if the Lord’s Pray is the most widely known and repeated prayer in the world due to its mystical and spiritual path of thought. I never knew that the pray had seven “petitions”. This does make sense to call them “petitions”. After all, the Lord did make a formal request to a particular cause – open one’s heart and soul in a conversation with God and thus an expression of faith in a relationship with God (Luke 18:9-14).
The more I read the Lord’s Prayer and compared it to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs the more I come to realize that all seven petitions work in perfect harmony that will encourage spiritual motivation. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be a valuable aid when dealing with the process of education. It helps motivate people’s actions and behaviours as each need is fulfilled from lowest level to highest level. The Lord’s Prayer addresses all five stages of Maslow’s needs and this will fulfill people’s spiritual growth to their fullest potential.
In conclusion, The Lord's Prayer is a very central part of Christian faith. It was given to Jesus by Matthew ... "This is how you should pray," He said (Matthew 6:9-14). It praises God and covers everything we need (spiritually) in this life to obtain eternal happiness just like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Also, I have come to understand that the Kingdom of God as being the Reign of God. This was mentioned as the “action of God in our lives” and His “loving initiative to make us whole” (Language of the Heart, 215).
Food for thought ...
Maslow, a psychologist, believes that a healthy human being has levels of needs that range from basic needs to higher level of needs. The lower level needs must be satisfied before higher-order needs can influence “spiritual” behaviour
I re-arranged the Lord’s Prayer according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs:
